Be aware that DJs aren't necessarily active in the morning, so to get the full experience, it's best to come a little later.

Big Ben: the world's best-known symbol of London!  

If there's one monument you won't want to miss when you visit visit Londonis this one! Big Ben can be seen from afar, and is certainly the best-known symbol of the British capital.

Introducing Big Ben

We generally refer to Big Ben to designate the whole of the clock tower, which can be found at Palace of Westminster where the British Parliament sits. In truth, this is a mistake, because Big Ben is only the largest bell in the carillon of this clock!

It is by metonymy that the tower and its clock have been associated, but the tower's true name is Elizabeth Tower (since Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee in 2012) and formerly Clock Tower.

This tower was built between 1843 and 1859 under the direction of Augustus Pugin, known as the founder of the culturalist concept in urban planning. He drew inspiration from the Italian towers of Venice and Florence, and from the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages, when towers were the norm. a symbol of power for a city. He succeeded in imposing a British identity on the building, which is now instantly recognizable.

Big Ben is one of a series of three towers of the Palace of Westminster. It's obviously the most famous of them all, with its four-dial clock, each measuring 7 meters in diameter. The minute hands weigh 101 kghours 304 kg ! And every day, the sound of the bells is broadcast at 6pm and midnight on BBC radio.

The huge bell - also known as the The Great Bell - dates from 1856 and is the second version, as the first cracked very quickly after installation. This one also cracked 2 months after replacing the first, but we kept it, installing a mechanism to prevent the hammer from hitting the damaged spot.

All you have to do is look up to see Big Ben on the horizon, or put your ear to the ground to hear it ring!

Before I explain what you can see when you enter the Clock Tower, I'll answer a question that's certainly on your lips: Is it possible to visit Big Ben as a tourist?

Unfortunately, the answer is No.

In fact, only the inhabitants of Great Britain are fortunate enough to be able to book a visit (at least 6 months in advance!) to discover the wonders hidden within. As a visitor, you can only admire it from the outside.

As a consolation, however, it's possible (and highly recommended) to visit the Palace of Westminster, where you can admire Big Ben up close!

What to see when visiting Big Ben?

If you belong to of the privileged who live in England and are therefore entitled to visit it, you won't be disappointed. Indeed, the interior of the tower is quite impressive, and the tour consists of :

And after several years of legal battles with the company that took over the number when it was finally assigned by the town hall, the museum obtained the right to use it as a official address.

A blue plate affixed to the outside of the building states that this was the home of Sherlock Holmes, thus perpetuating the myth that he never actually existed! This explains the reluctance of Arthur Conan Doyle's daughter to create an independent museum, as she didn't want the idea of his real existence to be reinforced.

It must be said that this Sherlock Holmes Museum does its utmost to render the author's universe as real as possibleThis is a perfect reproduction of the rooms in which the protagonists evolve in the books between 1881 and 1904.

This museum is located in a superb Victorian house of 1815, which alone is worth the detour, and offers an opportunity to step back in time in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Ms. Hudon, their landlady.

Whether you're a fan of the pipe detective's investigations or just curious, I highly recommend this unusual visit!

The (organized!) disorder of this museum and the many details that abound in all the rooms will fill your heart with wonder. those who have read the novels As for the others, they may well want to plunge into Sherlock Holmes investigations as soon as possible.

At the end of your visit, you can buy the novels, or one of the many souvenirs on sale: a hat, a frame featuring the detective, a mug, pins, a bust or an adorable Teddy Bear dressed as Sherlock!

Chinatown: the Chinese quarter in the heart of London

London is a multicultural city and many neighborhoods are there to remind us: Brick Lane and its Indian influence, Peckham and its Nigerian community, and of course the Local Chinatown home to many Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, Guandong and Fujian province.

Introducing this Chinatown

The Chinatown district is Sohoand consists of 9 streets that intertwine Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and the Covent Garden.

It is bounded by 4 doors which serve as access points: 3 are fairly conventional and were created in 1986; but the 4ᵉ is quite atypical: it was designed in Beijing, in the purest style of the Qing dynasty (who ruled China between 1644 and 1912) and was inaugurated in 2016 by Prince Andrew. Don't miss it, because it's magnificent.

It's worth noting that this Chinatown is relatively recent, having developed here in the 70s. Immigrants from the Middle Kingdom used to occupy several streets in East London, on the Limehouse (near Canary Wharf). A convenient location for its proximity to the docks, as the Chinese who came to London were mostly sailors. At the time, it was possible to consume Opium !

After the intensive bombing of London during the Second World War, this first Chinatown was destroyed and the Chinese gradually relocated. The first Chinese restaurants opened in Lisle StreetAsian cuisine is booming in the British capital.

Little by little, ideograms adorned facades and decorated buildings, stores and restaurants. China's codesto transform the neighborhood into the Chinatown it is today.

Although significantly smaller than New York's Chinatown, Yokohama's Chinatown or the 13^e arrondissement of Paris, it's well worth the detour, for an express trip to Asia !

Do you love Asian food? You'll be in heaven in Chinatown! Visit lacquered ducks Dim Sum, fried pork and other delicacies of Chinese cuisine, you'll be spoilt for choice in the main streets of the district.

It's possible to eat Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese food in the neighborhood, but you might as well go for the authentic stuff! What's more, you'll notice that the dishes offered in these establishments are often much more traditional than those found in France. A real insight into China's (very rich) culinary tradition.

Shopping

Chinatown is packed with souvenir stores, clothing boutiques and food supermarkets. You'll be able to pick up a few Asian trinkets and take advantage of your visit to this local China to do some Asian shopping!

Strolling the streets of London's Chinatown is pleasant during the day, with a lively district and a fairly frenetic atmosphere. But in the evening, when the neon lights on the storefronts come on and the lanterns shine brightly, it's a different story, it's magic !
