Bakerloo Line: at a glance
The Bakerloo Line is a London Underground line. It passes through a number of major stations, including :
- Waterloo
- Paddington
- Baker Street
- Oxford Circus
- Piccadilly Circus
- Marylebone
- Willesden Junction
The line crosses zones 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with 25 different stops along the way. But there are many secrets on the line that few people know about.
A metro line full of secrets
The first secret is that the Bakerloo Line is the slowest in the network. London Undergroundand I'm sure that won't surprise many of those who use it.
One of the main reasons is that it is not automated like most other lines. Drivers often drive slowly to avoid colliding with the other train, which is probably not far ahead.
Bakerloo Line: drivers in the dark
Subway drivers are in complete darkness. This is because they only have light from the small control panel in the cab, so the brightest light they see is when they enter an underground station or when they're out in daylight.
However, it is the Bakerloo that sees the least light, because it is mainly entirely underground. This applies to all London Underground lines.
Most of them are above ground level, exposing the driver to much more light than is visible on arrival at a station.
A constantly evolving metro line
Stanmore is currently the end of the Jubilee Line. However, it was once the terminus of the Bakerloo Line. for around 40 years.
Its current terminus is Harrow & Wealdstone, but the line hasn't always gone this far, as it used to terminate at Stonebridge Park.
Marylebone had planned to be called "Great Central" and this can still be seen today, as there are still tiles bearing this inscription on the wall of the Bakerloo Line platforms. However, plans changed and now known as Marylebone.
Bakerloo Line: one of the only stops in zone 1
The line also includes a stop in Zone 1, which is very rare on the London Underground.
Nevertheless, Elephant and Castle's expansion plans in Lewisham could change that in the future.
Regents Park is one of the only subway stations on the entire line that has no station building, just a hole in the ground that leads to the stations.
It's not the closest station to London Zoo, but rather to Camden Town. Regents Park is about a twenty-minute walk from London Zoo.
There are many secrets all along the London Underground networkand here we've explored the Bakerloo Line. Now you know a lot more on this legendary London Underground line.
