{"id":933,"date":"2023-12-19T01:06:55","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T01:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/?p=933"},"modified":"2024-02-28T10:45:42","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T10:45:42","slug":"guardian-of-the-tower-of-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres\/","title":{"rendered":"Tower of London Warders: everything you need to know about the Yeoman Warders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Visit<strong> guardians of the Tower of London<\/strong>Yeoman Warders, have always existed.<\/p>\n<p>More commonly known as the Beefeaters, the Yeoman Warders have guarded the Tower of London since Tudor times.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I'd like to take a closer look at these rather special guards.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"summary-title\">Tower of London Guardian: article summary<\/h2>\n<div class=\"summary-box\">\n<ul class=\"summary-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc153726844\">Who are the Yeoman Warders?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc153726845\">Tower of London guards: what do they do?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc153726846\">Why are they called Beefeaters?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc153726847\">Tower of London Guardian: who is the Ravenmaster?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc153726848\">When can you see these guards?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc153726844\"><\/a><strong>Who are the Yeoman Warders?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Yeoman Warders were formed after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 by order of King Henry VII, making them the oldest existing military corps in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The Yeoman Warders are descended from the former Yeomans of the Guard,<strong> the monarch's personal guards, who traveled everywhere with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Henry VIII decided that the Tower would be protected by part of the royal bodyguard.<\/p>\n<p>The Yeoman Warders wear a splendid red uniform, known today as the state uniform and worn <strong>on state occasions such as the monarch's birthday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Experienced soldiers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A Yeoman Warder must have at least 22 years' service in the British armed forces. They have attained the rank of Warrant Officer and<strong> received seniority and good conduct medals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their official title is The Yeomans Warders of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/tour-of-london\/\">Tower of London<\/a>and members of the sovereign's bodyguard, the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-934\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres.jpg\" alt=\"guardian of the tower of london\" width=\"1600\" height=\"987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres-1024x632.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres-768x474.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gardien-de-la-tour-de-londres-1536x948.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc153726845\"><\/a><strong>Tower of London guards: what do they do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Modern Yeomans Warders are still extraordinary members of the Queen's bodyguards, combining their traditional ceremonial role with their love of history to tell the story of the Tower's past.<\/p>\n<p>You can see them organizing tours and welcoming <strong>the three million tourists who visit the Tower of London every year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They have been performing ceremonial functions since 1485.<\/p>\n<p>Yeoman Warders perform 21 separate tasks each day, including the key ceremony, a closing ceremony <strong>which has taken place every night at the Tower of London for at least 700 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This happens when the outer doors are locked for the night and the keys handed over to the monarch's representative in the tower.<\/p>\n<p>New Yeoman Warders take their oaths in a centuries-old ceremony, with each new recruit swearing an oath. <strong>an oath of royal allegiance dating back to 1337.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc153726846\"><\/a><strong>Why are they called Beefeaters?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The true origins of the \"Beefeater\" nickname are unclear, and no one knows exactly how they got their name.<\/p>\n<p>A popular theory is based on an old agreement according to which they had the right to <strong>eat as much beef as they wanted at the king's table.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc153726847\"><\/a><strong>Tower of London Guardian: who is the Ravenmaster?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Ravenmaster is one of 37 Yeoman Warders who look after the Tower's famous ravens, with the help of the other guardians.<\/p>\n<p>Crows are the subject of a superstition dating back to Charles II. Legend has it that the kingdom and the Tower of London will fall if the six ravens ever leave the fortress.<\/p>\n<p>At present, seven crows live in the Tower,<strong> one more than the six described in superstition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is thought that Charles II was the first to insist that the Tower's ravens be protected after being warned that the crown and the Tower itself would fall if they left.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A superstition taken very seriously<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Ravenmaster occasionally trims the feathers of some crows to encourage them to stay in the Tower.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the past, <strong>some crows left without authorization.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ravenmaster feeds the birds twice a day with a special diet consisting of :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of mice<\/li>\n<li>Chicks<\/li>\n<li>Of rats<\/li>\n<li>Assorted raw meats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A special treat, consisting of blood-soaked cookies, is also part of their diet.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc153726848\"><\/a><strong>When can you see these guards?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can see the guards during the Tower of London's opening hours. You'll need to visit the site:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sunday and Monday<strong> 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Tuesday to Saturday <strong>9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The guardians of the Tower of London are an important part of the building.
