In truth, this is a mistake, because Big Ben is only <strong>the largest bell in the carillon<\/strong> of this clock!<\/p>\n<p>It is by metonymy that the tower and its clock have been associated, but the tower's true name is <em>Elizabeth Tower<\/em> (since Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee in 2012) and formerly <em>Clock Tower<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This tower was built <strong>between 1843 and 1859<\/strong> under the direction of Augustus Pugin, known as the founder of the culturalist concept in urban planning. He drew inspiration from the Italian towers of Venice and Florence, and from the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages, when towers were the norm. <strong>a symbol of power<\/strong> for a city. It's obviously the most famous of them all, with its four-dial clock, each measuring 7 meters in diameter. The minute hands weigh <strong>101 kg<\/strong>hours <strong>304 kg<\/strong>\u00a0! And every day, the sound of the bells is broadcast at 6pm and midnight on BBC radio.<\/p>\n<p>The huge bell - also known as the <strong><em>The Great Bell<\/em><\/strong> - dates from 1856 and is the second version, as the first cracked very quickly after installation. Indeed, the interior of the tower is quite impressive, and the tour consists of :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From the rise of <strong>334 steps<\/strong> to reach the top, where you'll find the belfry and bell tower!<\/li>\n<li>Discover the inner workings of the chimes, which are almost never late!<\/li>\n<li>The famous <strong>main bell<\/strong> (a real Big Ben!), weighing in at 14 tonnes, 2.2 m high and 2.7 m in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Clocks, with the possibility of standing right behind the dials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An interesting visit, for one of <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/monuments-london\/\">London landmarks<\/a> the most easily identifiable.
