{"id":1350,"date":"2024-02-22T03:31:23","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T03:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/?p=1350"},"modified":"2024-03-12T07:44:55","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T07:44:55","slug":"oyster-card-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/oyster-card-enfant\/","title":{"rendered":"Oyster Card for children: what you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am often asked if your child needs the<strong>Oyster Card in London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I come back to you on how to pay for your children's transport in London.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"summary-title\">Oyster Card for children : article summary<\/h2>\n<div class=\"summary-box\">\n<ul class=\"summary-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227130\">Oyster Card for children: do they have to pay to use public transport in London?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227131\">For children under five<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227132\">Oyster Card for children: ages five to ten<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227133\">For children aged 11 to 15<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227134\">Oyster Card for children: for older children aged 16 and over<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227135\">How can children under 11 use public transport?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#_Toc158227136\">Do adults need Oyster cards to travel in London?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227130\"><\/a><strong>Oyster Card for children: do they have to pay to use public transport in London?<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fares and means of payment available for your children on public transport in London <strong>depend mainly on their age.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1351\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/oyster-card-enfant.jpg\" alt=\"oyster card child\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/oyster-card-enfant.jpg 800w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/oyster-card-enfant-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/oyster-card-enfant-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227131\"><\/a><strong>For children under five<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If your child is under 5, he or she can travel for free on London's transport system.<\/p>\n<p>This covers :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/bus-london\/\">bus<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/london-overground\/\">London Overground<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/london-metro\/\">metro<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/boat-london\/\">Uber boats<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/telephone-london\/\">cable car<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, they can only travel free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227132\"><\/a><strong>Oyster Card for children: ages five to ten<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Once again, children aged 6 and 10 can travel free of charge on London's various public transport systems, as long as they travel with a paying adult.<\/p>\n<p>They don't need an Oyster card and up to four children are welcome. <strong>can travel at any time with a paying adult.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, if you want to see London from above with the cable car, children aged between 5 and 15 will only have to pay the children's fare.<\/p>\n<p>If you are planning to travel <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/uber-boat-london\/\">Uber Boat<\/a> at least twice a day, it's best to buy a Family River Roamer ticket, where you can hop on and off an unlimited number of times.<\/p>\n<p>This is valid for<strong> two adults and three children aged 5 to 15.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227133\"><\/a><strong>For children aged 11 to 15<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Children aged 11 to 15 must pay for transport, but they can benefit from a reduction of <strong>50 % on their rates thanks to the discount for young visitors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To get it, you'll need to buy an Oyster card, a travel card that costs \u00a37 (non-refundable), and can be topped up at stations with credit that allows you to travel.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have your card, ask a member of staff to <strong>any train or metro station to add the Young Visitor discount.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just make sure you have your child with you when you apply.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227134\"><\/a><strong>Oyster Card for children: for older children aged 16 and over<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It works in the same way as any regular paying adult. However, if they don't have a contactless card, it's best to buy them one. <strong>an Oyster card which they can then recharge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227135\"><\/a><strong>How to use public transport for children under the age of 11<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At all stations, there will be a row of narrow barriers where you can enter and exit using your contactless card, Oyster card or paper ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside these narrow barriers, there will always be wide barriers (usually two) at the ends of the rows, designed for people traveling with suitcases, children, dogs and larger objects.<\/p>\n<p>These are designed to help people break through barriers <strong>without getting accidentally trapped along the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the bus, simply take the kids, pay your fare and find a seat.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc158227136\"><\/a><strong>Do adults need Oyster cards to travel in London?<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are three main ways for adults to pay for public transport in London:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Oyster card<\/li>\n<li>Debit or credit card<\/li>\n<li>Apple or Google Pay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oyster Cards are not required to use the city's transport system, but there are a few things you'll need to familiarize yourself with before visiting.
