Two years later, the Greater London Authority <strong>would get a new headquarters simply named H\u00f4tel de Ville.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A futuristic-looking building, it houses the offices of the mayor, the London Assembly and numerous municipal services.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1166\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall.jpg\" alt=\"london city hall\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/london-city-hall-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478454\"><\/a><strong>A huge building<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 10-storey town hall covers more than 17,187 m\u00b2, with an exterior of 2,100 tonnes of steel and 7,300 m\u00b2 of glass.<\/p>\n<p>The glass fa\u00e7ade has a diameter of 45 metres, which makes it <strong>as wide as the building is tall, with a height of 45 metres.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, this caused some controversy, as the bill for washing these windows came to around \u00a3140,000 a year.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478455\"><\/a><strong>London city hall: the work of a well-known London architect<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If the design elements of City Hall seem to reflect the Gherkin, it's no coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>Architect Norman Foster<strong> designed both buildings, and loves to use glass in his creations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478456\"><\/a><strong>A building not to everyone's taste<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The simple fact of calling it City Hall was a tribute to the American-inspired structure of the Greater London Authority, which was an attempt by the British government to establish a \"city hall\" format. <strong>more effective than the Greater London Council.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bulbous nature of the structure lends itself to comparisons with a car headlight, an ashtray and a fencing mask.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknames for City Hall include \"The Snail\" and \"The Onion\". Former mayor Ken Livingstone and current mayor Boris Johnson have given it cruder nicknames.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478457\"><\/a><strong>London city hall: a spiral footbridge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Town Hall has a long spiral walkway that runs from the first floor to the top, although it is closed to the public when the Assembly is in session.<\/p>\n<p>The ascent is said to be akin to a flight on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/london-eye\/\">London Eye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478458\"><\/a><strong>The scoop: a summer showroom<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Outside is a sunken amphitheatre known as \"The Scoop\". You can also discover the charm of <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourlondres.fr\/en\/theatres-london\/\">West End theaters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478459\"><\/a><strong>A diversified government<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The glazed and open nature of the architecture has already been the subject of a complaint from Assembly members that it was \"too open\". <strong>to be used by separate political parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They sought an alternative building plan, but nothing came of it. Today, four parties make up the representatives of the London Assembly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Labour controls the chamber with 12 members<\/li>\n<li>Conservatives with 9 members<\/li>\n<li>Green Party with 2 members<\/li>\n<li>Liberal Democrats with 2 members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478460\"><\/a><strong>London city hall: how much did it cost to build?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Town Hall cost \u00a343 million and is not owned by the Greater London Authority, but operates on a twenty-five year lease.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478461\"><\/a><strong>Space for rent<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The upper level contains a space known as London's Living-Rooms, which can be rented for<strong> private events and organizations at \u00a35,000 per night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to corporate and charity events, the Living-Room was even the venue for an after-party following the premiere of the film Minority Report.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc156478462\"><\/a><strong>London city hall: an eco-responsible facility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In line with the trend towards more energy-efficient government buildings, City Hall features a number of functions designed to <strong>reduce energy consumption.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The roof of the building is fitted with solar panels, the air conditioning system uses cold groundwater instead of refrigeration, and this water is then used in the toilets.<\/p>\n<p>The deep floor plan allows heat to escape<strong>\u00a0in the heart of the building, then spread out everywhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The spherical shape of the Town Hall helps to reduce energy consumption by minimizing surface area.<\/p>\n<p>The London City hall is an establishment you can come across on your trip to London.
