Cycling in London: article summary
What are the regulations for cyclists in the UK?
Although the Highway Code advises cyclists to wear a helmet, it's ultimately a personal choice.
The key to making cycling safer lies not in compulsory helmet wearing, but in improving infrastructure and the environment. And London is a champion of infrastructure.
Many of the safest places in the world to cycle also have the lowest helmet wearing rates. So you won't be if you don't wear a helmet when cycling in London.
Is it safe to cycle in London?
The Highway Code and the basics of road positioning are things all cyclists need to be aware of.
You also need to be careful to use the right equipment.
If you're new to cycling and feel a little nervous, Limit yourself to parks or traffic-free routes first, and work your way up from there.
Be clear, alert and visible. Communicate clearly with other road users through signals and eye contact.
Remain vigilant throughout your journey, and you'll stay safe.
Can you listen to your music on your bike?
It's imperative to avoid distractions on the road, as car noise is often the first warning of potential danger.
If you're wearing them, it's even more important to look over your shoulder before changing direction, even if you're just getting around something that's bothering you.
What should I wear when cycling?
Although cyclists are synonymous with lycra, there's no need to break out the spandex as soon as you decide to get on the bike.
In fact, if you drive slowly, you can even wear your everyday clothes.
If you want to cycle at night, I recommend a good jacket with reflective panels.
What are the benefits of cycling?
Cycling really is a magic pill. It helps you integrate exercise into your daily life, relieves stress and improves air quality for everyone.
One of the special things about cycling is that it doesn't just benefit the person doing it, but everyone.
The health benefits are also obvious. Finally, visiting London by bike is a unique experience that you won't regret.
