Shoreditch: a popular district in the world of street art

It's hard not to stroll through the trendy district of Shoreditch today. However, this part of London wasn't on any tourist's radar until the late 90s. Nor did the average Londoner venture here.

Street art in London: artistic transformation of the East End

London's historic East End is best known for its troubled past, characterized by its multicultural and rather poor inhabitants.

It's no wonder that East London neighborhoods like Shoreditch and Hackney have become playgrounds for graffiti artists and urban artists.

Over time, the neighborhood gradually changed. Graffiti tags turned into sophisticated works of street art. Artists such as Banksy emerged on the scene.

But years before these extraordinary murals attracted masses of world-famous artists and tourists to Shoreditch, the local authorities still considered all forms of urban art illegal.

Art that changes over time

Due to gentrification, the character of street art is changing again. Quite typical of the area, even street art is becoming increasingly commercial.

In recent years, I've seen murals appear in Shoreditch promoting luxury brands such as Gucci or commercial products and new records.

Hackney: East London's artistic hub

Hackney is another East London district that has always been a popular destination for urban artists.

It's a huge neighborhood, and street art is scattered all around. But in this blog post, I'm concentrating on the streets of Hackney which are just around the corner from Shoreditch and Broadway Market.

Street art along Rivington Street

Rivington Street is a good place for street art, as it is home to many iconic works such as one of the rare works by Banksy in the region.

Hackney Wick would be the latest victim of gentrification. I suppose the success of the new Stratford district, developed on former marshland for the London 2012 Summer Olympics, has turned neighboring Hackney Wick's land into gold for property developers.

Certainly, when you came out of Hackney Wick station a few years ago, all you saw were abandoned buildings covered in graffiti.

With the exception of the famous former Lord Napier pub, all the buildings have been demolished and replaced by rather characterless apartments.

Dalston: an authentic atmosphere and colorful street art

I'm always impressed by the authentic atmosphere of Dalston's colorful streets.

You can find many works of street art in this area without being surrounded by other tourists. The most striking work of art is the mural on Dalston Lane, as it tells the local story.

Street art district in London: Camden, a major street art hangout

Camden is one of the world's tourist destinations in London.

But I think Camden is the second most important street art area in London, with Shoreditch in the lead. You can head to Camden and enjoy a quick self-guided tour early in the morning.

Walthamstow: unusual and captivating street art

If you really want to get off the beaten track and discover new unusual things to do in London, you might consider visiting Walthamstow.

This up-and-coming area of south-east London offers excellent food and culture, including an impressive street art trail with works by some of the world's greatest artists.

London's street art district: visit the Leake Street tunnel

Located on the same street as the station, you'll find the famous Leake Streetalso known as the Banksy Tunnel. It's a veritable graffiti hotspot, as evidenced by the perpetual fumes of paint.

Leake Street Tunnel is not only popular with street artists and graffiti artists, but also with tourists.

In recent years, several venues have opened in these gravelly arches, including the Drafts board game café.

Brixton: color, culture and street art

London's multicultural Brixton is a lively and colorful neighborhood. Thanks to its large Afro-Caribbean community, you can eat some of the best food here. But Brixton is also a great place to discover urban art in London.

Brixton's most famous piece of street art is this David Bowie memorial directed by Jimmy C on Tunstall Road.
