Inside Windsor Castle: a long royal history
On your visit to Windsor Castle, you can learn all about the castle, inside and out.
You'll learn that Windsor Castle is the King's official residence. It is also the oldest and the world's largest inhabited castle!
Dating from 1070 A.D., William the Conqueror built the Windsor Castle to provide a fortification for those arriving in London from the west.
The castle took 16 years to build, but the building has been modified over the centuries. The castle's wooden walls were replaced by stone at the end of the 12th century by Henry II, and then the entire facade was transformed. after George IV's accession to the throne in 1820.
Discover the château grounds
On arrival at the castle, you can take a free 30-minute tour of the castle grounds led by the janitors. They will talk about the history of Windsor Castle.
You can then head inside the building.
Inside Windsor Castle: discover the state apartments
When you visit Windsor Castle, you'll see the state apartments built for Charles II and his queen, Catherine of Braganza, in the late 17th century.
They are considered to be one of the largest Baroque state apartments in England. Not only are the rooms exquisite, but so are the decorations.
You can visit rooms such as the great reception hall, where the king welcomes his guests. official visits by heads of state and award ceremonies, as well as paintings by notable artists.
Semi-static halls are open every year from autumn to spring. Your ticket price will indicate whether or not these halls are open to the public.
As you stroll through these private apartments created for George IV, you'll discover some of the castle's most lavishly decorated interiors. Today, the King uses them for entertaining guests.
One of the most interesting things to see is Queen Mary's doll's house.
Getting around Saint-Georges chapel
Your ticket to Windsor Castle includes a visit to St. George's Chapel. This is where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.
The chapel of Saint-Georges contains the tombs of ten sovereigns, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour.
It is also the resting place of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Inside Windsor Castle: St George's Vespers
A choir, created almost 500 years ago, performs in the evenings to give listeners a moment of restful contemplation.
If you're not planning to visit Windsor Castle, you can always attend Evensong. It's a the only way to get into St. George's chapel without a ticket.
Just line up at the main gate about 20 minutes before Evensong starts.
What are the opening hours at Windsor Castle?
You can visit the site and tour the interiors:
- Late March to October, Monday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
- From late November to February, Monday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
