Golden Hinde: at a glance
The original Golden Hinde was the first maritime museum. It was located in Deptford, London. for almost 70 years before it was demolished.
The replica was built in Appledore. Using traditional restoration methods, the replica spent most of its life on public display. Like the original ship, it has also sailed around the world.
A large-scale project
Since its launch in 1973, the Hinde has covered more than 160,000 km, including a complete circumnavigation of the globe. two other Atlantic crossings to his credit.
In 2017, knowing that the need for a major conservation project was looming, a full survey was commissioned and the marine surveyor confirmed the building's solidity.
The team's plan was to replace "identically", returning the gallion to its original state when launched.
A costly restoration
They anticipate that the refit will take another two years, after which a plan will be put in place to maintain it in the future. The total estimated cost is around £1.5 million.
In addition to the redevelopment, the team is ready to build a new reception center on the quay.
This will enable them to expand their educational activities and also create a collection of objects for display.
Golden Hinde: an educational building
The challenge: to complete the redevelopment while remaining open to the public. As a totally self-financed operation, the team continues to offer educational programs open to the general public.
The vast majority of costs have been covered by operating income, and so far the deficit has been made up by other internal sources.
Other challenges included finding qualified shipwrights willing to live and work in London and in create a fully functional wooden shipyard beneath the vessel.
Daily challenges
Although the work took almost a year and a half to complete, the team of 7 carpenters made good progress.
In March 2017, Toby Millinder joined the team as head carpenter and worked with this small but capable team.
