New DLR trains from 2019

Although none of the original 1980s trains still run in London, many of today's trains date back a long way. Some are in service since 1991.

In 2019, TfL has announced that it is ordering 43 new trains to rejuvenate DLR lines. The trains are produced by Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles.

What's so special about the new DLR trains?

The new five-car DLR trains feature passing cars, real-time travel information and air conditioning.

There are also charging points for your phone. Nor are the trains red, black and blue. Instead, they have been replaced by white and turquoise wagons.

More folding seats increase capacity by around 30 %, making it easier to accommodate wheelchairs, strollers, bicycles and luggage.

Are the new DLR trains driverless?

Like their ancestors, the new trains operate in automatic mode. What's more, they can be controlled remotely.

In addition to this increased capacity, TfL has announced plans to build an extension of the DLR to Thamesmead between 2026 and 2030.
