The only marina in central London, St Katharine Docks is packed with old sailing ships and modern yachts.

The red telephone booths give it a typically London feel, while the modern buildings give it the impression of a city. to be a million miles from the British capital.

How to get to St Katharine's

St Katharine's docks are easily accessible by a number of means of transport.

The most obvious way is by tube. The neighborhood is just a short walk from Tower Hill subway station. Along the way, you'll enjoy superb views of the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge.

Tower Gateway DLR station is nearby, and St Katharine's Pier is served by a number of riverboats along the Thames.

Buses stop all around the neighborhood and there are plenty of parking options if you want to drive.

St Katharine's in London: a little history

Once there, you'll begin to see the layers of history in this part of London.

Designed by Scottish engineer Thomas Telford, St Katharine's docks opened in 1828 as a commercial wharf on the site of a 12th-century hospital called St Katharine's by the Tower.

Its lack of capacity to accommodate large modern ships and bomb damage during the Second World War combined to sound the wharf's death knell. It was officially closed in 1968.

St Katharine's Docks were subsequently leased to developers, and many of the original warehouses have since been demolished. were replaced by modern buildings between the 1970s and 1990s.

What to do on site

So, what's there to do in St Katharine's? Whether it's exploring the marina, admiring the views or enjoying the food and attractions, this London neighborhood packs a lot into a relatively small area.

One of my favourite activities at St Katharine Docks is walk around the marina and admire the place.

Outdoor tables fill the waterfront walkways, and narrow walkways offer excellent vantage points for observing ships and boats on the water.

The wide, cobbled squares are fun places to relax, and the riverside offers some of the city's best views of Tower Bridge.

There are also great markets at St Katharine Docks. Weekly food markets fill the area's open spaces with stalls selling all manner of prepared dishes.

Thursday and Friday afternoons, a market invades Marble Quay at St Katharine Docks.

An ever-changing mix of vendors sell prepared meals:

• Caribbean jerk chicken
• Filipino barbecues
• Japanese bowls
• Vietnamese banh-mi

The diverse set of stalls makes things lively at this riverside market.

St Katharine's in London: not-to-be-missed events

There are also events in St Katharine throughout the year. The marina serves the starting point for regattas and round-the-world sailing races.

In addition, the Classic Boat Festival takes place every September in association with the Totally Thames Festival. It's a great opportunity to climb aboard over 40 boats and enjoy live music, activities and food and drink.

There's a lot to see at St Katharine's in London. During your trip, I'd advise you to get away from the touristy sites for a while. and take a tour of the place.

One of London's hidden gems is called St Dunstan in the East and has over a thousand years of history.

Today, I'd like to introduce you to this place in detail.

St Dustan in the East: article summary

The history of St Dustan in the East

St Dunstan's chapters on Eastern history resemble an epic tale with black magic, the devil, burning buildings and casualties of war.

This structure has been present at this location for more than 900 years, or even a thousand years. it has survived much of London's turbulent history.

Viking invasions, Saxon settlements, the dissolution of monasteries, the Black Death, the Great Fire of London and the Blitz - the monument has always been there!

St Dunstan's church in Saxon times

St Dunstan's Church appeared in 1100 in Anglo-Saxon times. It owes its name to St Dunstan, a monk of the Xᵉ century.

This monk had an extremely eventful life. As a child, he battled a fatal illness and made a miraculous recovery.

Famous, he has been summoned to King Athelstan's court. He finds himself involved in a plot to bring him down.

His enemies accused him of using black magic and witchcraft, and he was thrown out of court and into a cesspool.

Later, he was covered in boils all over his body, which many thought were due to leprosy.

After his miraculous healing, he took it as a divine sign and decided to take his vows and live the celibate life of a hermit.

A legend linked to the Devil

According to legend, the Devil himself tempted Dunstan to fish, but his divine purpose kept him faithful.

Finally, the now Archbishop of Canterbury!

The church was built in his honor in the 12th century, but numerous repairs were carried out in the 14th and 17th centuries.

St Dustan in the East: at the time of the Great Fire of London

In 1666, a fire that broke out among the bakers of Pudding Lane destroyed 1,600 houses and 87 parish churches in London, including St Dunstan's Church.

It became known as the Great Fire of London and consumed around one-sixth of London at the time.

Even the historic St. Paul's Cathedral was completely burnt down and had to be rebuilt.

Another blitz demolition

During the Second World War, Germany launched a bombing campaign against the UK called The Blitz in 1940 and 1941.

Around 2 million homes and buildings have been destroyed during this period, and thousands of lives were lost.

The steeple and tower of St Dustan in the East miraculously survived, but the rest of the church structure was largely destroyed.

After the end of the war, the City of London decided not to rebuild the church, but opened it to the public in 1971.

Why visit this place today?

It's always fun to visit some of London's great sights like :

• Buckingham Palace

Unlike these sites, St Dunstan's is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle. It's also a testament to London's history.

A place for botany enthusiasts

If you have a particularly green thumb, you may be wondering what kind of plants grow here, amidst the Gothic ruins.

Many trees grow here through the windows, and their vines manage to wrap around the walls, through windows and cracks. There are even tropical palm trees here!

In the lower garden, you'll find the winter bark of Drimys winteri, a vitamin C-rich plant once used to treat scurvy. There are also many plants and shrubs among the climbing plants.

Are church services still held at St Dustan in the East??

Although the last indoor service took place here before the Blitz, some outdoor services still take place on the grounds near All Hallows by the Tower.

They usually hold an All Hallows procession along St Dunstan's Hill on Palm Sunday. Afterwards, they finish in St Dunstan in the East and will hold the service.

St Dunstan in the East: entrance fees and opening times

Entry to St Dunstan's in the East Churchyard is completely free all year round. So it's a great activity to experience in London if you're on a budget.

The church garden open all year round, 8 am to 7 pm.

How to get there?

St Dunstan in the East is located in the London Bridge district.

The nearest subway station to St Dustan in the East is Monument on the Circle and District line. However, you can also get out at Tower Hill station, which is also a stop on the Circle and District line.

Discovering St Dustan in the East is like entering a world of its own right in the heart of London. You'll find a quiet, green paradise surrounding a magnificent ruined church. What a real change of scenery!

TramShed: at a glance

One of Cardiff's six streetcar depots, this magnificent historic building served as the western terminus for the city's streetcars and trolleybuses until 1953.

Later, the space was used as a maintenance workshop for Cardiff's municipal vehicles. Today, it has been refurbished and opened under the name TramShed in Cardiff.

Now Cardiff's newest venue, this large industrial space hosts everything from rock to reggae, comedians to club nights, film screenings to food festivals.

 

A place to party

Whether you're looking for concerts, DJs, comedy or even a fitness class, you can be sure that the TramShed will offer you the very best in entertainment.

Over the years, many artists have flocked here, giving this place its present-day soul.

TramShed: a long list of artists

Opened in October 2015 with an inaugural concert by Irish rock band Hothouse Flowers, the TramShed has been attracting top talent ever since.

It's always an eclectic line-up at this venue, with stars who have graced the hall's stage including:

But it's not all music at TramShed. That's right, many different types of events take place in this superb venue.

Can you eat or drink here??  

It's forbidden to bring food and drink into the TramShed. But with plenty of space on site and plenty of places to eat and drink nearby, you'll have no trouble filling up.

Whether you want a snack before your exercise class or a meal before a concert, there's plenty of choice at TramShed.

If you'd like to eat in, head to the waiting room for sandwiches, light snacks or burgers.

Located to the west of Cardiff city center, there are still many excellent restaurants and cafés nearby.

If you're looking for excellent portions of good Italian food at a good price and in a relaxed atmosphere, make a trip to La Manitoba. It's my safe bet when I go there.

What to do near the TramShed?

Head east across the river to Principality Stadium. Formerly known as the Millennium Stadium, this is the home of the Welsh national rugby team.

But Wales' national stadium isn't just for sports fans: it also regularly hosts huge concerts by music superstars.

Follow the River Taff northwards and you'll enter one of the UK's finest green spaces: Bute Park.

With a world-renowned arboretum, numerous hiking trails and picnic areas, you'll find plenty to keep you busy in this park.

How to get to the TramShed?

Located to the west of Cardiff city center, there are several ways to get to the TramShed.

By bus

If you want to take a bus to the TramShed, you'll find plenty of routes in the city center. To find a bus stop a little closer to the site, just click on 92, 93, 94, X45 or 9.

By train

The nearest station is Cardiff Central, a 10-minute walk away. Exit the station and turn left onto Wood Street. Cross the river, turn left onto the embankment, then right onto Pendyris Street.

Whether you're travelling to Cardiff from London to enjoy an evening of music, or you're here to see the sights, I'd recommend a trip to the TramShed. It's a a place not to be missed in the region.

After these dubious beginnings, the place quickly became an institution in Camdenthe Britpop movement of the 90s, and spawned countless new bands.

Muse was signed to the pub after performing a set by Tony Gleed, described as electrifying.

The back room of Dublin Castle has played host to many a noisy, beer-fuelled party.

As any music fan knows, it's an incredible place to see both established artists and the next big thing on the music scene, before they became famous.

It's easy to see how the pub became one of London's iconic and legendary concert venues.

Dublin Castle is not just a pub or a simple concert hall. It's a good old London bar, combined with a wide selection of talented artists.

The Dublin Castle: a lively place

The pub has witnessed its fair share of wild, outrageous and downright bizarre events. The place has been ransacked after concerts.

Around 1999, there was a stage invasion at a concert where two people started having sex on stage.

When you go there, it's like walking through the doors of a place where the party never stops.

A must-see in Camden

The venue has been a major player in Camden's music scene for around 40 years now, and has retained its individuality throughout.

In fact, little has changed for the pub. has been in the same family since it was founded in the 70s.

It's a small enclave steeped in history. Entering Dublin Castle offers much the same feeling today as it did 40 years ago, as the interior and ambience remain largely unchanged.

There's still that classic pub atmosphere and that electric concert atmosphere in the back room.

As for the music, it's as varied and well-chosen as ever. Offering incredible live music in an intimate space has been and always will be a major objective of the venue.

To guarantee a place in this new bar in the basement of the Shoreditchto get your name on the list.

You will then be asked to present yourself at the restaurant. The Breakfast Club on time.

When you arrive at The Breakfast Club, look for the entrance to The Mayor of Scaredy Cat. You'll usually have to wait until your host arrives to enter.

He'll open the door of the custom-built SMEG refrigerator and, inside, you'll discover a staircase leading up to the bar, complete with illuminated neon sign.

This is probably the best entry in any London bar I know.

Discover the furnished bar

Downstairs, the bar is small but perfectly appointed. Tall wooden tables, high stools and benches are scattered throughout this comfortable basement.

The lights are dim, the masonry is exposed and covered with wood, and the ceiling is industrial.

It's impossible to believe that you were in a restaurant on the first floor just 1 minute ago.

It really does feel like you're in an underground bunker, where only the "in the know" can get in. can relax over a delicious cocktail.

The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town: a cosy bar

The bar only holds around 40 people, creating a really lively atmosphere.

As the night progresses, the music gets louder and louder and you'll be dancing to all kinds of music.

A highly diversified drinks menu

The drinks menu is eclectic, with a selection of good spirits and a small but interesting cocktail list.

Our beer, cider and pale ale are also unique in the world. No Corona or Becks here! Prices are reasonable and fortunately affordable for such a cool place.

There's also a small menu with hot snacks to satiate your stomach.

Although you must make a reservation, the establishment will offer you a slot:

• Monday to Wednesday 5 to 11 p.m.
• Thursday to Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight
• Saturday between noon and midnight
• Sunday between noon and 10 p.m.
