For newcomers to London, the Tube system can be a little complicated at first glance.

If you're not careful, you could easily find yourself on the right line going in the wrong direction.

Walking around London is great, but to get the most out of the city, you'll need to master the metro.

Before you even leave your hotel, you should take a close look at the metro map. You can find a map online, download the Tube Map or pick up a hard copy at your nearest metro station.

Understanding line colors

The first thing to understand is that each color on the map represents a different transport line.

• Solid colors are underground lines
• The mixed orange and white lines represent overhead train lines.
• The blue and white line represents the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

Make sure you know if you're looking for a metro station, an aerial station or DLR.

If a line has more than one color, it's because several train lines use the same tracks and stations. When traveling on these lines, make sure you get on the right train for the line you want.

Each station has a name, and stations with a large black and white circle are stations where you can change lines.

Find out which station is closest to you, where you want to go and how to get there. the optimum number of changes to get there.

If you need help, you can always do a Google route search or rely on your Tube Map application.

The tube map is only a facsimile of the actual surface layout of London. Do not attempt to use the tube map as a walking map, you risk getting lost.

Buy your ticket

Nobody in London really uses paper tickets anymore. Most people get around using either the Oyster Card or a contactless payment card.

London Underground app: how to get on the Tube

You should now have found the nearest metro station using your app and purchased your Oyster Card. As you approach the gate, place your card on the yellow reader and the gate will beep. You can now enter the metro line.

Lines accessible from your station should be clearly signposted. Make sure you carefully follow the line you are looking for and find the right service.

Once on the right station platform, you shouldn't have to wait more than a few minutes for the train to arrive.
